Pow Wow

My Mom is trying to convince me to come to a pow wow with her this weekend.

I'm bringing a metal picture frame with no picture or glass in it to the park. Photo op?

My aunts coming to town tonight!

I'm spending the night with 2 of my besties.

I'm helping my Grandma move tomorrow.

Thinking about hitting up the budget movie theater with some dollar store candy....I'm my mothers child.

Im on a country music kick....I cant get enough!

7 things my kids wont have

I love when older people tell stories about their childhood. Every generation has a childhood of course but nobody's was the same. I laugh at the thought of today's generation of kids having to walk miles to get to school, just like their grandparents did. This then got me thinking of how my childhood will be different then my kids. I'm not sure what the future will be like when I eventually become a Mom but I have a few guesses on what my kids will never experience or use.

1. Phones with cords. My kids will never have to stay in one spot, twirling the phone cord, while talking with friends.

Grandma: She remembers phones before there was even a rotary dial (Must people in my generation don't even know what that is!)
Mom: She remembers sharing a land line with her neighbors. You could listen in on others conversations. She also has had to use a pay phone!
Me: Cordless landlines, cellphones, access to the internet through the phone, ability to take pictures, text messages, etc.

2. Saturday morning cartoons or VHS tapes?  I remember getting up early just to watch my favorite cartoons that only played on Saturday. Even today kids can watch cartoons 24-7 if they(or their parents allowed it) wanted to. And those big bulky VHS movies were the best. They didn't get scratched...ever!

Grandma: Forget about televisions in general. The radio has the cool thing to have...TVs were a rarity.
Mom: Remembers when her parents bought their first TV! Black and white TV shows and 1 station!
Me: Flat-screens, Netflex, DVDs, VHS, Blu-ray, Cable, 3D, etc

3. Hard work( my mom wanted me to add this). Chances are my kids will never have to till a field, milk a cow, or shovel manure.

Grandma: Her family owned a motel so there wasnt much "farming" but she did work really hard.
Mom: Worked on her parents farmed. Milked in the morning before school, milked after school, bailed hay, removed stones from the field, and had other daily chores that had to get done.
Me: Vacuuming the living room is my chore for the day! I work at my moms consignment store some days too. For the record I have milked a cow, bailed hay, drove a tractor, and shoveled cow manure....thats a lot compared to other kids in my generation.

4. Using books for research. Believe it or not I have actually used books from the library instead of google.....when we didnt own a computer(I cant believe we have only had a computer for like 9 years!). Today I google everything...and it saves me a lot of time!

Grandma: No internet, and no library within walking distance. Im not sure how she survived high school.
Mom: She used the library...a lot!
Me: I use the library....when I dont feel like buying a book to read. Like I said google is my best friend.

5. Riding in the front seat as a young kid. I remember my first time my mom let me hall my booster seat to the front passanger seat. It changed my life...well maybe not my life! Today kids stay in the back in carseats until they are like 12...or older.

Grandma: Seatbelts didnt exist...either did the amount of people allowed in a car. Babies riding in their mothers laps didnt even phase people.
Mom: Once again no seatbelts, babies riding in their mothers laps, etc.
Me: Carseat until parents pull you up to the front(in a booster seat of course). My sister couldnt ride in the front until she was 10. haha

6. Film....the ones you put into a camera and need to develop in order to get pictures. Thanks to digital cameras there is no need to mess with the film. Just download it to your computer and print your pictures off. My kids wont even know what it will be like waiting to see if your picture turned out....they have screens and delete buttons instead.

Grandma: Black and white. You had to get it professionally done too.
Mom: Colors a little better...you get more of a sepia look. People actually smile in pictures.
Me: I had a few years with the old film cameras but spent the majority of my life with cameras on phones, laptops, and even a good ole' camera not attached to anything. Im grateful for the delete button!

7. No adult supervision. Of course with every generation parents always have watched their kids but what parent in these days would let their kids run off and not come home till dinner? I have memories of doing exactly that...my kids will be more watched unfortunatly. Technology has spread more worries about safety and the world. Back then I am sure those issues existed, but we were blissfully unaware and had a real childhood that had no cares.

Grandma: She would play in the woods, in the creek, in a barn, etc and would return home when the sun started setting. She would then tell of her adventures of that day. Her parents really had no clue what she had been up to because they had been working.
Mom: Same as my Grandma but she would have to check in every once in a while during the day.
Me: My Mom actually allowed me the experince of running off with the neighbor kids into the woods. I wasnt allowed to leave a certain area or cross any busy street though. Some kids in my generation dont even know what it's like to have that freedom.

Other things throughout the generations.
Devices to listen to music- Radio, turn table,  walkman, CD player, ipod.
Objects that held the music- Records, cassete tapes, CDs, itunes
Ways to get active/use muscles- Trees, metal playground equipment, plastic playground equipment, Wii
Ways to store information- Brain, paper, huge desktop computers, floppy discs, laptops, ipads
Car Windows: Windows that didnt move, manually roll down the window, push a little button

Sleep

Every summer it happens.

Even though I tell myself I wont allow it to.

I'm a night owl that loves to sleep. Bad combination if you ask me!

I find myself wide awake at 4am writing blog posts.....about sleep!

No matter how much I try going to bed at a decent time, it never works out!

I either a) Toss and turn for hours on end or b) a good TV show is on or c) I have plans that don't allow for an early bedtime.

Chances are Ill fall asleep around 5 or 6 in the morning, sleep my day away till 3pm, and then repeat the cycle.

Hopefully I outgrow this soon...within a day or two. Because July is full of early mornings!

Well, I hear my cat meowing from outside. He has the same problem that I do...I'm going to go get him and then try to get some sleep...try being the key word.

Floral

I have said many times that I hope three things never come back into style.  Those three things are jumpsuits, floral anything, and big crazy hair that requires an entire can of hairspray to keep in shape. Well I have recently come across the jumpsuit(Thank you Forever 21) and floral anything is making a huge comeback. I might of caved and bought something I swore I never would.....
(Courtsey of google images)
Hahahaha I had you going for a second didn't I? No? Oh well I thought maybe I did. Of course I didn't buy this! And if I ever did I give you permission to set me straight!

I had major bedhead so I left out my face in these!

Yes, I gave in and bought something floral. I wore it as a skirt and a dress too!
Maybe this is a sign that I might start liking jumpsuits and crazy hair...

A great many things

I read the book Little Women in 8th grade and fell in love with it! I found the movie(In VHS! Scary to think some kids don't even know what VHS is anymore) at Goodwill recently and I loved it just as much. My favorite quote from the book is this....

Mr. Mayer: You should have been a lawyer, Miss March.

Jo March: I should have been a great many things, Mr. Mayer.

I should of been a great many things. That line just speaks to me!
I sometimes get lost in a world that tells me what kind of person I have to be...what person I should be. What kind of friend, daughter, blogger, high-schooler I am.

Little does the world know what great things I plan to achieve, what stars I plan to reach for, and what life I plan on living....little do I know what lies ahead.

I do know one thing though....one thing the world doesnt want you to always know.

You can be a great many things!

In life it's all about the leaps you make, the fun you have, and the adventures you have along the way.
So jump in every puddle, laugh until it hurts, take a chance, and....

Be a great many things!

Change of plans

So I didn't end up going to North Carolina.

I got enjoy this instead!
It wasn't a big surprise either.

I ended up being able to make my best friends 16th birthday party (I got to surprise her with my presence!) and I was able to spend some time with my Haiti team!

Syds birthday was entertaining..always is when my friends are involved! We ate at Noodles and Co, went to see Something Borrowed(I didn't think it was good), showed Syd I wouldn't die if I walked on her roof, and other things. It was fun! I love sleepovers with my friends.

The next day I drove up north with my other best friend Shannon and her mom. Shannon and I are going to Haiti on July 24th! So we worked on some projects with a lady we will be going with. As much as I wasn't looking forward to it I had fun. I love having late night talks with people! I then woke up to the smell of eggs and bacon cooking.

As much as I would of loved going to North Carolina, I'm glad it didn't work out as I had planned. I would of missed out on my besties birthday and a great time with my Haiti team! Just shows that God knew best.

La la la la

Katie: Rae, this song reminds me of you!
Me: Why?
Katie: I can imagine you dancing and singing along especially at the "la-la-la-la-la-la-la" part.

Chicago and North Carolina

One of my favorite things about summer is the random things you can plan at the last minute. This entire weekend has been based on last minute plans and I had a blast.

On Friday I asked some friends to see a movie with me(Water for Elephants which is a great movie!) I ran into my friend Victoria, who I literally haven't seen in years, which was a big surprise! I then visited my friend Sarah at her job at Hallmark. She told me to vacuum and made me clean glass.....not good customer service! I rode on the little kid carousel(which you have to push in order for it to start), almost got kicked out of a bounce house place, watched kids steal soda from a soda machine while watching a security guard walk by at all the wrong times, and got some Starbucks.

We finally made it to the movie. Then walked to Taco Bell at 11pm from the movie theater. That night ended with gummy bears all over my room, all my lights that were suppose to be in my room out of it, and me sleeping in the living room on a pull out couch.

On Saturday I had plans to go to Chicago in which we decided to leave Sunday morning instead. My mom, dad, sister, and I shopped, ate food, and had a fun little adventure downtown. My Dad brought up the idea of the family joining him in North Carolina for a meeting he had...so I'm leaving today on another adventure.

I love summer!

Oh and Happy belated Fathers day!

Everyday things

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle.
But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth.

Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize:
a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child - our own two eyes.

All is a miracle.

~Thich Nhat Hanh

Pictures are from my little sister and her ummm fabulous photography skills....
Emory wasnt feeling like having his picture taken either!

5 things

1) I like to eat frozen waffles. Seriously, if I don't have time to put a frozen waffle into the toaster I'll just eat it frozen. I actually prefer it frozen too!

2) I love Sherlock Holmes everything. Books, movies, etc.

3) My coach said "You're the quiet leader of the group" when discussing our softball team. I don't remember the last time someone called me quiet.

4) I'm more excited about not ever having to be a under-classmen playing a sport then actually the thought of playing the sport itself.

5) I'm craving a Dr.Pepper at the moment.

My weekend...briefly

My weekend involved a graduation party, my dads laugh, ding dong ditching in brood daylight, my friends baby shower, the chicken dance, picking up drunk adults, falling asleep during church, eating mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese at 2am, playing Just Dance on the Wii(Hard game!), a bon fire, sitting in the middle of a street(or streets), surprising my coach by showing up at her house and a window sill full of cat hair!

Yes, it was a good weekend.

Except for when my cat(Who wasn't even allowed in the room except I brought him in) jumped on a window sill that had wet varnish on it(I managed to fix it before my dad could see. My finger prints are still visible though......), and trying to find a car full of drunk adults after a Kenny Chesney concert.

Other than that I had a marvelous time!

How was your weekend?

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Today I am

still in my pajamas after being awake for 5 hours already.

drinking a McDonalds Smoothie.

watching Clifford the Big Red Dog and actually enjoying it.

eating Fries from Burger King.

wearing the same yellow shirt, with the sticker still in place, that I wore when I got my shots.

smiling when I think about last nights adventures.

having to pee really bad but not wanting to get up from my comfy chair.

wondering how long I can pull the "hair not brushed, face not washed, no make-up applied" look.

catching my newly 5 year old cousin randomly smiling at me while playing with his cars.

hoping he still considers me cool even though I look like a mess.

considering hoping in the shower after he just randomly laughed and pointed at me.

enjoying the feeling summer brings.

wondering how you are spending your day!

Volleyball....unfortunatly

A few days ago(April 19th to be exact) I was walking to the locker room. Thinking about softball related things. All of a sudden Mr. S stops me in the hallway and somehow in less then a minute I had committed myself to playing volleyball! The sport I swore I would never play again! Our conversation went a little(okay a lot!) like this

Mr.S: Yes or No
Rae: What?
Mr.S: Are you playing volleyball next season or not?
Rae: Well, umm
Mr.S: We are ordering jerseys and need to know if we need to order you one.
Rae: I'm not sure.
Mr.s: Well I need to know. If we order you one and you choose not to play you still need to pay for your jersey( $100 might I add!)
Rae: Yes.
Mr. S: Yes, you're playing?
Rae: Sure
Mr. S: Great!

Why did he have to stop me!? I was not thinking about volleyball! I wasn't planning on making any volleyball decision until this summer. So I'm stuck playing volleyball. All because I didn't have the guts to say "No". I'm not looking forward to this at all! Volleyball at my school isn't fun. We run a lot and yet yelled at even more. Plus we suck...and the previous volleyball team was amazing! Oh joy.

This is what happens at 2 in the morning.

Im such a night owl when it comes to summer time. During the school year I like to be in bed by 10pm but once the weekend or summer comes around Im back to my old ways! I had this conversation last night at 2am. Perfect example of why I need sleep otherwise I think I go a little crazy!

Me: Are you up? (as I nudge A)
A: No, Im climbing Mt. Everest!
Me: Im craving cheese.
A: Well go get some cheese.
Me: Cheese and Miracle Whip. Yea that sounds good!
A: Thats weird.
Me: No its good! It's like a sandwich without the bread, or meat!
A: Whats a sandwich without bread?
Me: A sandwich would not be complete without lettuce! Do you have lettucee?
A: Go make a sandwich and leave me alone. Im trying to sleep!
Me: I dont like sandwiches.
A: (Silently staring at me like Im crazy)
Me: Why are you staring at me?
A: Can we go to sleep now?
Me: No, I need my cheese and Miracle Whip.
A: (turns away from me and falls back asleep. Leaving me to dream about cheese and miracle whip.)

Get a good 8 hours of sleep into me and I promise I become normal again.....kind of.

Connecting

In english class a few weeks ago we talked about the old kid friendly shows we watched as kids(and sometimes Ill watch them now!) and we all just happened to have our favorites be on PBS Kids. We brought up Arthur, Cyberchase, Redwall, Dragon Tales, Zoom, etc. When somebody would mention a certain show we would all chime in "I loved that show!" or "I remember that show!"

My friend said "It's so weird that we all have one thing in common with our childhood yet didn't even know each other back then. We are all so different too!"

It does amaze me how you might not be the closest to someone yet have something that connects you. Something as simple as a TV show you watched in your childhood. Or realizing you have the same birthday as someone.

I thought I would leave you with a video from one of my favorite childhood shows...this song brings back memories! My friends and I just might randomly sing this song at school.

Those darn shots...

I've never been a fan of getting shots( I assume you aren't either, if so you're crazy!). On Monday I had to get 3 shots. My sister also had to get shots the same as mine.

I know you could care less about me getting shots but don't worry I'll get to the point in a minute.

Back to me hating shots! I've never had anything bad happen(besides a sore arm, not being able to see, and almost breaking my moms hand) while getting shots. They never really hurt me either. I just hate the thought of the needle going through my skin. yuck

So when I was waiting for my sister to get her shots I started getting really hot, like sweat dripping down my face hot. I then started getting dizzy and asked my sister if she felt dizzy(because she got the same shot) and she said "no". Then I started getting light headed and I couldn't see very well. I leaned against my mom, who was busy talking with the nurses about something. All I remember is my sister saying "Rae are you okay?" and then someone said "She's white as a ghost!". The rest was a bit of a blur. Then they had me lay down, offered me juice, and asked if I was feeling better. The lady was rubbing my leg trying to comfort me and all I could think about was how I hadn't shaved in a few days! ha

After recovering I felt like an idiot! Seriously, who practically faints after a shot? My little sister didn't even do that! It was such a weird thing. I did get apple juice, and a sticker out of it. It's a two part shot though which means I get the same shot in 6 months! Hopefully it goes better then this time

The friends we have

I just learned the new term "Cotton Candy friending." which is a phenomenon among the Facebook generation where the more friends you have the better and soon you realize that you have 1000 friends on Facebook, but no friends offline. I find myself every once in a while checking to see how many friends I have on facebook. The majority of them I'm not even close with or I've met once.

I'm a person that has a few close friends and that's it. I'm fine with that too. Sure, sometimes I wish that I could be some social butterfly that is popular and seems to know everybody. The thing is I see more drama in that persons life then I do in my own. I loved this list I ran across on this website all about true or fake relationships with friends. Yes, that website is about parenting teens. It was completely by accident that I ran across it. I dont plan on parenting teens for a long time!

1) It can take 50 years(give or take a few) to build a relationship
I have a whole variety of friends. Some I see once a year, others I see almost everyday, and a few are everywhere in between. My current group of friends are amazing. We were considered outsiders (didn't have a set group already coming into high school) and stuck together mostly because we were forced too. 2 years later I consider these girls my best friends. We balance each other out. Will our relationship continue outside of high school? I sure hope so but I'm sure a few of us will go our separate ways and not come back. My oldest relationship(close relationship) is only 11 years old and we still work at it!

2) What Does it Mean to Know Someone?

Facebook allows you to get a glimpse into people's lives. Some of the people you might never have even talked to or would consider talking to. I hear all the time from others "Yea I know that person we are friends on facebook!" So does that mean you are friends or facebook friends. With today's technology it's really easy to claim that you know someone because you see the pictures they post, or the status' they write but in reality you don't know this person at all!

4) Would you have someone to call if…
Sometimes you just need a friend to vent to or you really are in trouble and need help...who would you call? I try hard to show my friends that they could call me no matter what the circumstance or time. On a few occasions my friends have taken up that offer. I have had so many people(such as coaches, friends, family or adults I'm close to) say "If you ever find yourself in a bad situation don't be afraid to call me!" In reality I wouldn't call the majority of these people!

5) Different Types of Friends
I think having different kinds of friends is good. I have my shopping friends, my partying friends, my relax and just watch a movie friends, my camping friends, my church friends, my I see you once a year friend, and so many others. Which I find completely okay. I think it's important to have friends with different interests or personalities.

First summer weekend

I had a great first weekend of the summer! Beautiful weather and lots of food. It involved lots of eating, eating, and talking. That's what happens when you attend 4 graduation parties.

The first two grad parties my friend Elisebeth( My party buddy. We like to party hop together) and I ate a lot of food, snooped around the house went to the bathroom, was forced to hide in a closet (because of the bathroom breaks), and we ate more food. It was a blast and we even involved our spanish and english teacher in our "bathroom breaks".

The last one on Saturday was for my cousin Cody who lives 1 hour away. He's on my Dad's side and his family is always interesting. That involved a drunk guy (actually my dads gay cousins boyfriend) trying to ride his bike home, lots of second hand smoke(yuck!), many stories, and even more laughs. After we got home around 11pm I drove the ATV to my friends house. ha

Today the church nursery had 2 babies, Charlie (6 months) and Taryn (3 months). Which is a lot for our small church. I was in heaven holding them. Especially Charlie! I just love that age. Then we headed to my friend Kayla's grad party. I once again got my hands on another baby. Adilyn is 3 months old and she was so cute. After her mom had to practically pry her from my arms I enjoyed more food, pictures, and some dance game on the Wii.

I loved this weekend!

Driving Lessons

On Tuesday I had a driving lesson. It was the most interesting driving lesson I have had so far!

When I first got picked up and a girl was driving. This chick was a horrible driver! She backed up into my street and then decided to adjust her seat! While still in the middle of the street! When we were approaching a stop sign she was singing her heart out to the radio and Phil(my driving instructor) said "There is a stop sign up ahead" She completely ignored him to the last second and slammed on her breaks! There was a lot more slamming on the brakes later on. Then she randomly decided to start talking about this guy at her school who smokes pot and all the pregnant chicks at her school. Finally we dropped that crazy chick off and it was my turn to drive!

I was alone with Phil. Who is the nicest guy ever! Well, I must admit I did a lot better then her at stopping and paying attention. The radio was on though and I think every awkward song came on! Such as bedrock, sex on fire, Like a virgin,...etc. All in a row! Then the lady who was talking on the radio said "So I got this email and it says My friend asked me to be a bridesmaid. She lives out of town and I don't have much money to spend. A groomsmen offered to let me stay in his hotel room. He is really hot and  I'm afraid we might hook up after the wedding! Would that be a bad idea?" Let me just say I think it was one of the most awkwardest moments of my life!

So after he turned the radio down(I think he realized how weird it was getting) I asked him what his summer plans were. Apparently(don't tell anyone I told you because I promised I wouldn't tell anyone) he is starting his own driving school. His boss(who is his brother-in-law) is an ass and he his sick of working for him. The rest of the car ride Phil told me all about his future business and how much he hates his boss.

The only thing that could of made this lesson worse is hitting something/someone with the car. Which I was tempted to do!

2010-11 School year

I'm officially done with the 2010-11 school year! It went super fast. I tend to confuse Freshmen year with Sophomore year a lot! While I'm glad to see this year be over I'm a little bummed as well.

I'm going to miss the seniors. I've been use to senior classes that do a great job at being role models(for the most part) and are actively involved in extra circular activities. The upcoming senior class aren't exactly the best role models and many sports next year will be left with seniors(Volleyball will have 1 and Softball was 0) Meaning my class will really have to step it up in everything!

There are some good things too. I'm officially an upperclassmen! No more being told what to do by older kids, no more carrying all the equipment for sports, and finally being able to tell the younger kids "I'm an upperclassmen that's why!"

I can only imagine what the next 2 years will bring and how fast it will go!

Today I....

  • Completed Biology and hopefully got a good grade on the final.

  • Had a whip cream fight in spanish class.

  • Was involved with this conversation "Senora she wont tell me where my flip-flop is!" "Well she tried to pants me!" "I only did it because you stole my shoe and it would of been funny!" "Estella! Sophia give Estella back her shoe!" Typical Spanish class....

  • Had a cookout in tech ed complete with Hamburgers, brownies, juice, chips, salsa, and cake!

  • Handed in my 10 minute english play!

  • Had a grass fight during lunch.

  • Drank out of the juice carton in tech ed when no one was looking! I felt like a rebel....

  • Bought a sweatshirt(was once Logyns), pair of shorts, scarf, and pants for $1 at my school "rummage" sale. I love when people leave their stuff in the locker room and I get to buy it for a good deal!

  • Emptied my locker and threw away my biology notes!

  • Had a good day!

Saying love

Recently my sister said "Why do you tell so many people you love them?"

Which got me thinking about how many people I claim to love. My family, my best friends, my cat, and that's about it. Apparently I say it often enough though to have my sister ask that question.

I then started noticing every time I said "I love you!"

My facebook and texting conversations between my besties always end in some cutsie ending such as "I love you dollface, goodnight love, love you babe, etc" We sound like we are dating or something! ha

That's just how we roll. I assume most people find it weird that we always claim to love eachother. I seriously love these girls like sisters so why not treat them like one?

Do you claim to love your friends and literally tell them? Or do you find it weird?
