  • The underclassmen residence halls has no air conditioning. It has been in the 90s since we all arrived. Four students have gone to the hospital for heat related problems. The college has made a ton of buildings open 24/7 so students can get a break. People have even been sleeping in the lounges and getting hotel rooms. Apparently, this is the hottest it has been in a long time during the school year. My fan has become my best friend!
  • I got my first, "Don't come into my room. I'm a bit busy." text from one of my suite mates. I'm glad I'm not sharing a room with her. It is her birthday today. I'll let her off the hook this time. Welcome to college.
  • My roommate and I both love to sleep and we are night owls. I'm not sure if I am glad about this or not. Mornings are terrible with us! Our alarms constantly go off and we continually hit the snooze buttons.
  • I haven't been taking many pictures. I feel like I should be but I have been to lazy. Oh well.
  • I love not having to be in class from 8-3pm. It is such a waste of time.
  • I really do love college but my high school started a few days ago and I was sad. It feels like yesterday I was sitting in class and goofing off with my friends. It is hard to believe those days are over.

Bad Luck

I've almost completed a full week of college. The actual class part has not started yet, but I have still been busy. We have had orientation class which pretty much answers our questions, makes us play name games, and talks to us about drinking.

One of my suite mates and another girl invited me to a party. Of course it ended up being a frat house. About fifteen minutes, after we arrived, a cop car pulled up next to the house with its lights on. We eventually found out he had just pulled a car over, but the house went on lock down practically. The music and lights were shut off, alcohol was hidden, and the blinds were closed. This all happened within 30 seconds of the car showing up. I didn't stay long after that and got to escort a couple drunk girls all the way back to the dorms.

Summary of this story: I went to my first frat party, a cop came, I didn't drink at all, and I helped drunk girls home.

Scott, Hailey, Sharna, and I went to rave, ate lots of free food, and dance a lot! The best part of being a college kid is that people are constantly feeding you! Scott and I left the rave and decided to check out a party. The people outside were comparing their criminal pasts and the amount of money they are/were paying for fines and lawyer fees. We found that a bit ridiculous and didn't stay long at that party either.

My luck with the college party scene has not been that great.

I have found two churches that I like though! College is doing strange things to me.

I also went to see a hypnotist show thing. It was hilarious!

Some of my favorite quotes from this week include....

Scott: I missed the alcohol awareness class because I was hungover.

Scott: If I ever got the chance to be a stay-at-home dad I would totally do it! I'm always jealous when I see the life of stay-at-home moms. I want to cook dinner and watch children too!

Kelli: Do not go to frat parties. Apparently, bad things happen to girls that go. Plus, their house is definitely not up to fire code.
Hayley: I need to buy a rape stick!
Scott: A rape stick? That sounds terrible.
Hayley: It's just a stick that you put into the window tract to prevent it from opening.
Scott: So an anti-rape stick?
Hayley: Rape stick rolls off the tongue better.

Things I learned during orientation

Orientation has been so helpful...
  1. If your roommate has sex when you're in the room do not be afraid to tell them to leave. You are paying rent to stay in your room and your roommates sexual partner is not.
  2. Do not have sex in the showers.
  3. Do not go and party at the fraternities. They have a reputation for slipping things into girls drinks.
  4. Do not allow anyone to make you any kind of drink and don't put down your drink.
  5. No one at the front desk will say anything about you being drunk unless you are not able to walk by yourself. If you cannot walk they will call your RA and you will get into trouble.
  6. If someone seems to be suffering from alcohol poisoning, get them help. You will not get into trouble if you are drunk yourself.
  7. Don't drink under street lights. You will probably get caught.
  8. Free tutoring is available.
  9. College is a lot different that high school.
  10. Be social and don't stay in your room all the time.

Dorm Room Tour

So I was expecting a small dorm for my roommate and I. It turns out that we really lucked out! Im in a suite. So you open our main door and you enter a hallway that has three doors(bathroom and two rooms) and my roommates closet. I love that I only have to share a bathroom with three other people! The rest of my floor has to share a bathroom/shower area.

(Right side view from our bunk bed. My desk is next to the wall.)

(The view when I sit in my bed)
(The view of our bed/fridge area from the door)
(My closet. Yes, that is all of my clothes.)
(View of our bunk from my desk. Mine is the bottom. Ive been sleeping on top of my comforter because its super hot)

I love my room! It is in a good location and it is starting to feel like home.

Mac or PC

My friend Sarah swears by her mac. She loves them! She has only owned mac's so I find her opinions about them a little biased. I have only ever owned a PC and just like Sarah my opinion is probably biased too. For college, I caved and got a macbook pro. People said that making the switch would be hard but I have found it fairly easy. I still have no idea which one I prefer! They both have things that I love and things I could live without.

MacBook Pro-

Things I liked-

  • It looks sleek. I will be the first one to admit that Apple makes very nice looking products.
  • Scrolling with two fingers on the track pad. I enjoy using this feature and wish that the PC had an easier way to scroll.
  • The screen seems to look less pixelated.
  • The App store
  • Bluetooth. My phone has it but my PC does not.
Things I didn't like-
  • There is so many useless features on this thing.
  • I feel like it is set up for left handed people. Ex: The exit icon are on the left compared to a PC where it is on the right.
  • I hate the Microsoft word, excel, etc. They work so much better on the PC.
  • I like a simple right-click that will help me copy & paste, etc. Mac's don't have that with a track pad. I googled how to copy and paste and it is a much longer process then a simple right-click.
  • The price tag

Things I liked-
  • I feel like it is more user friendly. That could be just because I am more use to it but it goes back to the Mac having so many useless features.
  • They have a beautiful working Microsoft Word!
  • Right-click
Things I don't like
  • Windows 8. I don't have it on my PC but when I was using my friends it drove me crazy.
  • About once a year my computer breaks/gets a virus and I need it cleaned out. I haven't had my mac long enough to see if I have the same problem but I hear they do not get viruses as easily.

If I had to buy another laptop or desktop I would probably pick PC. The main reason being the cost. We live in a world today where people/business' only care about a profit. They build things not to last because they want us to keep buying over and over again. Apple is no different but their price tag is different. Eventually, all laptops fail and I would like to know that I didn't just spend $1000+ on it. Maybe, PC's end up costing the same in the long run but up front I can't justify the cost.

If money wasn't a factor I would probably go with a Mac. I have an iPad and I may get an iPhone. I like how I can link them all up. It just makes sense going with one brand. Plus, that's what all the "cool" kids are choosing and since money isn't an issue I'll go with the crowd.

Last Night

Me: I have spent my whole life waiting to get out of this town. I am finally leaving and I already miss this place.

Victoria: Right? This town holds so many memories. I smoked my first joint behind that Shopko over there. It was the dumbest thing I have ever done.

Katie: That Petco would never let me pet the damn ferrets because you had to be eighteen.

Me: I would skip first hour to eat breakfast at the Perkins.

Chelsey: I got kicked out of that Shopko for sitting on furniture.

Me: What rebels we were.

I spent my last night before college with two friends I have had since kindergarten and a friend that I have had since freshmen year. We spent an hour in Applebee's talking about the future and the present. We then spent another hour in the parking lot reminiscing about the past. I am not good with tears and my friends were not being nice. One little thing would set them off and I would feel terrible. It feels good to know you are loved but I hate seeing them sad. We eventually parted ways because the lights in the parking lot went off.

I never realized how many people have helped piece together my life.
I was blessed with amazing people in my life for the past eighteen years.

Just who you are

"It's not the fact that you'll be back Rae. I know you will be. But you wont be a half a mile away. I cant run to you and bitch when my parents make me mad or when someone f**** a guy that I am seeing in my house. I wont have my truck stop buddy. I wont be able to just walk in your house and run downstairs. You won't be there. You'll meet other people and have so many new friends. I won't get a phone call from you saying, "Hey, I just saw you on town hall road."

I have always hated being left behind. I'm finally the one leaving and it's just as hard.

"I won't be able to come to Burlington without being upset anymore. I wont be able to eat at the truckstop.  I wont be able to watch Jerry Springer without hearing in my head, "Change the channel. This is so stupid!" Everyone says nothing will change and blah blah blah but it's always easier said than done."

Can I just pack up my friends and bring them with me? That would make life so much easier!

"Over the last 4 years of high school we have drifted. You've made so many so many other friends. That's just who you are and there's nothing wrong with that. I just feel that when you get home, I'll be the last one to know."

..... I hate change.

All night

Good luck in college ladies!
It is time to start a new chapter in our lives.
I'm glad that we have memories from the past four years to look back on.

(Sydney, your house flipped on me and I can't get it to flip around. So if you ever wondered what your house would look like with a different layout, your welcome!)

The End and The Beginning

States we have travelled through so far are Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho,  and Washington.

A nice "family" picture in front of Devils Tower.
I have loved my time with my bestie.
We have seen the beautiful scenery, ate way to much food, and laughed a ton.
Our road trip ended in Spokane,Washington.
This is the place that she plans to call home for the next four years.
Only 1475 miles away from where I will be attending school.

I have walked around her downtown, toured her school, and have visited her new house.
We have been staying at a lake house about 45 minutes from town.
It has been a relaxing vacation.

The truth is I have been pretending that Shannon will be returning home with me.
I hate to think that I will be boarding a plane without her.
She has been with me for a long time and I am going to miss her so much.

Tomorrow I am going to board a plane and that will initiate the fork in our road together.
I know it will meet up again but change is hard.
I've always had her by my side for it all.

Day 1 and 2

The Wild West Summer Road trip 2013 has officially begun.
We have it many famous landmarks, have driven over sixteen hours, and have met a lot of interesting people.

Day 1
We drove from Green Bay to Sioux City,IA.
My friend Shannon has family there and we decided to spend the night.
Her aunt and uncle have twelve kids and run their house like a boarding school.
All the kids are up by 6 in the morning, they all have chores(cooking, cleaning up,etc), and of course they have a lot of rules.
One of the girls pointed out Shannon's tattoo and then proceeded to show off her belly button piercing.
Apparently, that is against the rules and her parents have no idea.
No matter what your parenting style is you can never prevent your kids true personality to show.
Seeing the sibling bond made me want a big family!

Day 2
We drove to Rapid City, SD.
On the long drive we stopped by the corn palace.
I didn't find it that interesting but at least I can claim I went.
We had a pit stop at the famous Wall Drug.
It was really busy!

Our final destination for the day was Mount Rushmore!
It has been ten years since I was last there.
It's unreal seeing it in person.
I kept imagining all of the movies that had scenes that include Mount Rushmore.

We stayed for the late night lighting.
It was amazing seeing the faces all lit up!
They had a veterans tribute during it.

So far it has been a good trip!
I have been enjoying my car naps, I have finished reading a lot of books, and I have spent a lot of time with my best friend!
The driving portion of this trip is half way over!

Starbucks guy: Have you had a good day?
Victoria: We have! We went to the farmers market and randomly decided to get our noses pierced.
Starbucks guy: Really? Next stop is to randomly get a tattoo!
Victoria: That's where we are headed next!
Starbucks guy: (laughs) Of course!
Me: I'm pretty sure he thinks we are kidding.
Victoria: But we are not!

My friend Victoria was just making a tattoo appointment but we were not lying about going to a tattoo shop.
She loves me because I am random? I'll take that. She is a blonde by the way. Our hair color looks very similar! I can match brunettes, gingers, and blondes! My hair is having an identity crisis!

Well, I'll add nose piercing to my list of "dumb things I will probably regret one day but don't now." It is getting fairly long...

I have officially finished buying stuff for college. That is until I remember something else that I need but as of today I think I am done! I've enjoyed my summer of spending! That is until I look at the amount of money I had at the beginning of the summer and what it has gone down too.

At the beginning of summer I had so many big plans! It's sad to see that I'm already done with the majority of them. :( All I have left is a road trip to Washington with my bestie, breakfast between flights with my cousin in Salt Lake City, and move-in day at Winona. Why does life go by so fast? I feel like it goes by even faster in the summer!

Happy 19th Birthday

I have spent a few days this summer hanging out on my best friends couch, eating pizza and ramen noodles, watching our favorite movies from the past, and reminiscing about our past 12+ years. It was fun remembering past events. We had no idea that some of those days would become permanent fixtures in our memories. We were simply being kids and making the best out of it. In a few weeks we are moving out of our childhood homes. The houses that hold so many memories for us. We are on to the next chapter of our lives and after all this time we meet the fork in the road. It's hard for me to think about not having my best friend living across town. The worst part of growing up is change. I know that I will always have a bond with her and no amount of distance will change that. I just hope that our paths cross often and that the future holds many more Rae and Shannon moments.

Happy Birthday my beautiful girl. I wouldn't trade our time together for anything.

9 days

This summer has flown by and I am finally feeling the pinch. I have 9 days to fit everything in and I feel like that is not enough time! My friend is having a party on Saturday. It is sort of like a last get together before we all go our separate directions. I also have a rafting/camping trip planned that day with my high school friends. It sucks knowing that I am missing out on one last hurrah to attend another one. I guess that's life from here on out. Everyone that I love will not be in the same place after this.
